Materials
Over the last two decades there has been enormous progress in the material technology used to create hockey sticks. The vast majority of sticks are made with one (or a combination) of the following materials:
Wood
Aluminium
Fiberglass
Graphite (Carbon Fiber)
Kevlar
Titanium
Wood
Wooden sticks are generally constructed by lamination several types of wood in high quality plywood, then a layer of stick and blade with a thin plastic or fiberglass. Some manufacturers use fiberglass as a laminate between layers of wood. Today in NHL, only a handful of players still use wooden sticks, including Pavol Demitra, Jason Spezza, Paul Stastny and Fredrik Modin.
The biggest advantage of wooden sticks have today is their relatively low cost. Get wooden sticks cost more than $ 40 per copy, compared with $ 200 + for some composite varieties. This makes them a popular choice of young and amateurs. Wooden also enjoy a reputation for having a good "feel" compared to aluminum or titanium election. The biggest drawback to wooden sticks suffering is the relative irregularity and poor durability of wooden construction. Fiberglass
Glass fiber, along with the traditional tree, was the first composite stick material that is inserted laminate or coating to wooden sticks. Manufacturers have experimented with 100% fiberglass ice hockey sticks, but they suffered from poor "feel" and poor durability , and never really caught on. Currently there are no 100% fiberglass ice hockey sticks produced (although hockey sticks are generally made of pure GRP).
Today fiberglass is most commonly used as a composite with other materials such as wood, graphite, or Kevlar. Generally, a higher density of material was necessary for the players to perform.
Graphite (Carbon Fibre)
Graphite has been by far the most popular wall sticks used in the NHL and is growing rapidly in popularity for amateur and recreational players. Carbon fiber sticks were originally sold as shafts alone, like their aluminum counterparts. "A piece of" sticks, which consists of a single piece shaft and blade, has become the dominant type.
Carbon fiber sticks have become so popular mainly because of the way they combine features of wood and aluminum sticks. They offer the classic "feel" and performance of the best tree varieties and manufacturing consistency and accuracy of aluminum sticks. They can also manufactured with extremely precise "flex patterns" that can aid in the power and accuracy of the wrist and snap shots, and their manufacturing process makes it extremely easy to add any number of different materials and features that can dramatically alter the properties of the stick (a good example of this is the silicon injections done in some high-end sticks that are claimed to further strengthen their "feel").
Their main disadvantage is their high cost, combined with their relatively poor durability. While their average life span is not quite as short as their wooden counterparts, it's bad enough that competition senior players will usually break one every week or two, as for the whole team during a season can be very expensive. This can be an extremely unpleasant burden for "nonprofit" competitive team (Such as college hockey teams in the U.S.), some have begun to limit their players from using expensive composite sticks.
Kevlar
Kevlar, best known as a bulletproof material has become a fairly common component of composite sticks. Originally added to increase durability of aluminum stick wings, it was an ideal addition to the more fragile wood and carbon fiber rods, and today it is a material used by virtually every manufacturer. It is a useful, since it dramatically increases the durability of the stick without significant compromising its weight, feel, or flex properties.
Titanium
Titanium sticks are a relatively new development, and are both very rare and very expensive. They are usually just a shaft that will be combined with a wood or carbon blade in much the same way as an aluminum stick. Other sticks have titanium added as a composite material to carbon fiber or Kevlar.
Titanium is similar to aluminum in general characteristics, although it is lighter, stronger, and is said to be particularly superior "flex" properties (mainly due to the relative thin walls of the shaft).
Properties
Lie
The lie of a stick refers to the angle between the shaft and blade. A lie value of 5 equivalent to a 135 angle, and each additional lie value corresponds to a two lesser angle. With the bottom of the blade flat on the ice, a higher lie value causes the shaft to to stand up more straight. Typical values 5-7 most sticks now are near 5.5. Goalie sticks typically have a lie between 11 and 15
Players usually take a lie which will enable the blade flat on the ice while they are in their typical Skating position. Hall of Fame center Wayne Gretzky, for example, used a stick with a low lying, which corresponds to his deep skating Crouch and shorter in height, while Hall of Fame defenseman Rod Langway used a stick with a very high number lie as he was very tall and had a tendency to Skate in a very upright position.

Hockey stick shafts, much like golf club shafts, are very flexible, and this flexibility is an important component of their performance. Flex, bend, stiffness, and floggings are all terms used to describe the amount required to bend a given stick handle a certain amount.
With most complex and alumimum sticks, their flex characteristic is correlated numerically. This number, which ranges from 50 at 120, is printed on the foot and is equivalent to the amount of force (in pounds-force) it takes to deflect or bend the shaft an inch. For example, a 100 flex requires 100 pounds force (444 N) to bend the shaft three inches.
Stick flex seen as a very important characteristic that most players. Usually defensemen seek stiffer flex shafts as their major stiffness disseminate more power to blow shots and improves stick control. Forwards will generally seek more flexible shafts, as they require less force to bend and thus better placed to provide quick and accurate wrist shot and improving transient and stick handling.
Flex is also correlated to the player strength, stronger players will often prefer stiffer bend because they have a sufficient amount of strength to fully bend (and thus maximize the potential energy) through such shafts, will refer to the younger players and players with less strength generally has more success with more flexible shafts, as they are able to bend their optimal level.

Until the early 1960s, hockey stick blades were typically not curved. The toe shape refers to basic form at the end of the blade, and it is typically either round or square. Square toes make it easier to pull a puck off the boards or to create "toe drag" (Stick handling moves using the toe of the blade), while round toes make it easier to "flip" the puck, and also offer small benefits in basic puck handling.
Blades also differ in length and thickness, based on the player's preferences.
Illegal curves
The curve of a wing is limited most levels of competitive hockey, generally an amount of between half and three quarters of an inch. Premature measurements can be taken by trying to roll a penny under the knife placed face down on the ice, but accurate measurement requires a "needle gauge" which measures the curve accurately. Currently, the NHL limits blade curvature to 3 / 4 of an inch. Being caught using an illegal stick is typically punishable by a two-minute minor penalty.
Genesis of this rule was the "banana leaves "in the 1960s. At the height of this era, players will often just crossed the blue line and let fly with a slap shot, hope that bizarre behavior puck would beat goaltender. Goalkeepers who often do not wear masks in this era, was irritated by the danger this would pose to shoot them, and in response, began NHL gradually reducing the amount of curve a knife could legally have.
In the modern game, focuses on shooting accuracy virtually eliminated any preference for extreme blade curves. But hockey is still illegal stick rules, which has been cause for debate. The argument is that since no blade curvature does not offer any significant advantage to punish it is unnecessary. In addition, the coaches used the "illegal devices" punishment at key moments in games to win a power struggle, and in some cases, swing the momentum of the entire series.
Tape
The top of the shaft is usually wrapped with cloth tape in a way that improves the grip on the stick of the player's top hand. Most players also use a "knob" of tapes that will create a small gap between the shaft and the ice in case the stick fell, making it easier to pick up stick. Goalkeepers often wrap giant "buttons" on the end of their sticks (sometimes up to two inches across), making it easier for them to bury Express without losing stick (as well as make it easier to retrieve a dropped stick).
The magazine of the wand is usually wrapped with friction tape, a cotton tape that has been impregnated with adhesive, so it's moderately sticky. This is to improve puck handling and to avoid water damage on the foot. Some players will also apply wax to the tape to increase adhesion. Preferred amounts of puck friction varies among players and some players will use a regular cloth tape instead of friction tape, while Wayne Gretzky used friction tape and then used baby powder to lower its friction. There is also variation in color, black is the most common choice.
